1. IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A GOALIE SKATE
2. SHARPENING GOALIE SKATES
Contrary to popular belief, a goalie skate should be as sharp or SHARPER than a players skate! This is of even greater importance for younger, lighter goalies. The reason for this is that modern goalie techniques demand quick push-offs laterally on the ice. The sharper the blade, the quicker you will move, and with less wasted energy.
For young goalies, choose a hollow of at least "10". For older and more experienced goalies, choose as low as "6". An experienced sharpening expert will know what these numbers mean.
Some skates are available with a "pump" system as shown here. This is of particular importance for a goaltender, because it allows adjustments to be made quickly and easily - without taking the pad off to do it. For example, a goalie may feel he needs more tightness on one or two feet - after he has already dressed and come onto the ice. Without a "pump" system, it would be necessary to take the pad off to make this adjustment. A "pump" allows this adjustment quickly and without hassle.
Another consideration is to choose a skate that allows you to easily change the blade if necessary, instead of buying a new skate. Note the three screws as shown.
